It was late autumn, and Little Monk was busy sweeping leaves every day. While he swept, the leaves kept falling. It often took him all morning to sweep the courtyard clean, and by the afternoon, he had to do it all over again.
“You aren’t just leaves; you’re trouble!” Little Monk complained as he swept, and Master overheard him.
“You say the leaves are trouble?” Master asked with a smile. “Well said, well said! When trouble comes, we sweep it away! When trouble comes again, we sweep it away again!”
“The wind is too strong. It keeps blowing in leaves from other places,” Little Monk said and pointed at the monastery walls. “Our walls are too low, and our gates are always open. Fallen leaves finds a way to sneak in.”
Master patted Little Monk gently. “Where leaves grow, leaves will fall. Where there is happiness, there is also sorrow. If the leaves fall today, then we sweep today; if the leaves fall tomorrow, then we sweep tomorrow. Although we know more leaves will fall later, we don’t stop sweeping now. We have such a garden in our hearts too. Flowers bloom and wilt; leaves grow and are cast away. We do not see them as troubles, as long as we keep sweeping. Diligently, steadily, sweep by sweep, let the sweeping become your meditation.”
