on a fast
fast是「快速」,但是「on a fast」的意思是「禁食」或「斷食」。
原本正常三餐,若突然「禁食」,可能反而會對身體有害,所以有人不吃正餐,只喝水(on a water fast)或只吃水果(on a fruit fast)。
例如:
There's no more grueling type of fast or cleansing diet than a pure water fast.(沒有比『喝水斷食』更艱苦的類型了。)
You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body.(你可以進行為期3天的水果禁食,淨化你的身體。)
「禁食」或「斷食」過於激烈,為了安全,需要經過醫師處方再進行,比「禁食」輕微的是「diet」,例如:The doctor says I've got to go on a diet.(醫師說,我必須要節食。)
set off
「set off」是「出發」,例如:
They set off again at a more sedate pace.(他們以更從容的步伐重新出發。)
She has to set off at 5 AM in order to get to the airport at eight oclock.(為了八點前要到達機場,她五點就必須動身。)
We have set off on a journey round the world.(我們已出發環遊世界。)
除了行動的「出發」,也可以是情緒的「觸發」,例如:
That funny movie set all of them off laughing again.(那一部搞笑電影讓他們又都笑了起來。)
