提要　雖然「不滿現狀」是人類進步的動力；但是天生的高矮胖瘦卻是早已註定的了，保持儀容整潔、努力修習內在，不執著外相自然會容光煥發。

　One　day　a　horse　said　to　the　cosmic　god,"Oh　Lord,you　have　given　me　beauty.Youhave　given　me　other　good　qualities.I　amso　gratef ul　to　you.But　how　I　wish　youcould　make　me　more　beautiful.I　would　beextremely,extremely　grateful　if　you　couldmake me more　beautiful."

　The　cosmic　god　said,"I　am　more　thanready　to make　you more　beautiful.Tell me　inwhat way　you want　to　be　changed."

　The　horse　said,"It　seems　to　me　that　I　amnot　well　proportioned.My　neck　is　too　short.If　you　can　make　my　neck　a　little　longer,myupper　body　will　be　infinitely　more　beautiful.And　if　you　can　make　my　legs　much　longerand　thinner,then　I　will　look　infinitely　morebeautiful　in my　lower　body."

　The　cosmic　god　said,"Amen"　Thenimmediately　he made　a　camel　appear　in　placeof　the　horse.The　horse　was　so　disheartenedthat　it　started　to　cry,"Oh　no,I　do　not　wantto　become　a　camel.I　wish　to　remain　a　horse.As　a　horse,everybody　appreciated　my　goodqualities.Nobody　will　appreciate　me　as　acamel."

　The　cosmic　god　said,"Never　try　to　achieveor　receive more　than　I　have　given　you.If　youcry　for　a　longer　neck　and　legs,this　is　whatwill　happen.Each　thing　in　my　creation　hasits　own　good　qualities.The　camel　is　not　asbeautiful　as　you　are,but　it　carries　heavy　loadsand　has　a　tremendous　sense　of　responsibility.

　解說

　某一天，馬對神說：「感謝您給我美麗與其他優秀的特質，但我還希望你可以讓我更美麗，如果可以，我會萬分感激！」神回答馬：「我願意讓你更美麗，告訴我，你想要什麼樣的改變？」「我覺得自己的比例不夠勻稱。我的脖子太短，如果您可以讓我的脖子長一點，我的上半身將會無比漂亮，」馬說，「如果您讓我的腿更長更細，然後我的下半身也會更加美麗。」於是神說：「阿門」。然後，馬立刻成了一隻駱駝。

　這匹「馬」　沮喪的哭了，「哦，不，我不想成為駱駝，我還想繼續當一匹馬。身為一匹馬，大家都會欣賞我的優點，但沒有人會欣賞一頭駱駝。」神說：「不滿意我原來給你的外貌特徵，還要求更長的脖子與更長的腿，就有這種後果。我所創造的萬物都有其意義。駱駝雖然不如你美麗，但牠能夠承載重物，而且非

　常有責任感。」

　more　than　ready

　「ready」是「準備」。通常說「I'm　ready.」就表示「我準備好了」。

　「more　than　ready」除了表示「我早就準備好了」還有「非常樂意」的意味。

　例如常聽人說：「y o　u　a　r　e　mo r　e　th a　nwelcomed......」就是「非常非常……歡迎你！」

　well　proportioned

　「proportion」是「比例」。「well　proportioned」較通俗的認定是「黃金比例」，也就是上半身與下半身的比例是1：1.618。更深入的（更吹毛求疵的）還有「九頭身」等等說法。

　據說，人對「美食」的認定取決於十二歲前所吃的東西。也就是說，心中的「美食」其實是「有童年味道」的食物。

　而黃金比例之所以能主宰一切主觀認定的「美」，答案可能跟美食一樣：從小在無意識間，周遭環境與經歷決定了我們對美醜的品味。

　沙漠中的居民，很可能就覺得耐旱負重的駱駝，比馬美多了。

　disheartened

　「heart」是「心」。「dishearten」　並非「拿掉他的心」而是使人如同失魂落魄般的失望。例如：He　was　disheartened　that　his　parents　were　notcoming.（他的父母沒來參加，讓他失望透頂。）文中變成駱駝的馬，正因為失望透頂，所以沮喪得哭了。
