提要世間許多事，不能只看一時，「小時候胖不算胖」，將目光放遠，才不會糊塗一世。



It was high autumn. An olive tree and a fig tree stood near each other. The fig tree had lost all his leaves and became quite bare. Seeing his neighbour, the olive tree puffed up with pride.

The olive tree taunted the fig tree："How unlucky you are! You lose your leaves every autumn to be bare. But I flourish all the year round."

The fig tree argued, "Friend! It's my destiny to be bare and yours to be evergreen. But there is nothing to feel small or proud about it. It is out of control of both of us."

Few days later, there occurred a snow-fall. The snow settled on the leaves of the olive tree and gave way under its heavy weight. But as for the fig tree, the snow fell to the ground through its bare branches and it survived the snow-storm.





深秋時分，橄欖樹和與無花果樹並肩聳立。無花果樹已經落盡了所有的樹葉，只剩光禿禿的枝椏，身旁的鄰居—橄欖樹則顯得躊躇滿志。

橄欖樹嘲笑無花果樹：「你怎麼這麼倒霉，每到秋天就成了光禿禿的；但我一年四季蓬勃生長。

無花果樹說：「朋友！我入秋落葉，而你是常青樹，這都是自然現象，沒什麼需要感到自慚形穢或洋洋得意的，也都不是我們能控制的。

幾天後，來了一場暴風雪，厚重的積雪堆在橄欖樹的枝椏葉間，沉甸甸的重量終於將它壓垮；在此同時，雪雖然大，穿過無花果樹光禿禿的樹枝掉在地上，無花果樹反而躲過暴雪倖存了。





原來如此gave way

「give　way　to」　是「讓步」。cars　gave　way　to　the　pedestrians.（例如：The汽車禮讓行人先行）

文中「......the　iv　andheavy　weight.」橄ol欖e樹tre對e厚重gave way　under　its的積雪「讓步」，也就是被積雪給壓斷枝幹了。

puffed up

「puff」 是「噴、吹氣」。例如：The train puffed into the station. （火車噴著煙駛進了站。）

「puff」 也是「喘氣」They were puffing after climbing the hill. （他們正喘著氣爬山。）

文中「......the olive tree puffed up with pride.」則是橄欖樹驕傲的「嗆聲」！
