3. Dharma methods are immeasurable; I vow to learn them all{9}: To vow to learn all Dharmas.
After the Buddha attained enlightenment, expounded the teachings for forty-nine years, and spoke for more than three hundreds Dharma assemblies. He also spoke about Mahayana and Theravada teachings, and taught the teachings in the aspects of the noumenal, the phenomenal, and emptiness.
The schools which propagated the Dharma in our country such as Chan, Pureland, Vinaya, Tantric, Tiantai, Huayan, Faxiang (mind-only), and Sanlun (three treatises), regardless of which doctrine or school they followed, all intended to explain the truth of the universe and human life, and to teach the knowledge of attaining Buddhahood. As the saying goes, “Penetrating the Tripitaka and gaining the wisdom as vast as the ocean.” In order to deliver sentient beings, bodhisattvas must be able to deliver themselves first; and at the same time, make vows to learn the profound and immeasurable Dharma so that they can equip themselves with the ability to benefit both themselves and others.
