眼前的世界所以動盪不安主要的原因之一是，在某些地區「東方文化」oriental culture與「西方文化」occidental／western culture依然處於對立狀態。
在英語中ori這個拉丁文詞根代表「升起」（rise）之 意，所以「東方」the Orient是表「太陽升起的方向」（the direction in which the sun rises）。但orient（= orientate）也可當動詞用，具有「（使）朝東、定向、定位、使熟悉新狀況或環境等」含義，例如export-oriented industries是「外銷導向的企業」，to orient the new students是「讓新生熟悉環境」，而to use the sun to orient oneself是「藉著太陽找出自己所處的方位」。oriental art／studies是「東方藝術／研究」。
另外ori（rise）也含「起源」之意，例如「來源、起源」是origin；originate（動詞）是「源／來自珥珥」，original則是「原來的、獨創的」或「原作、原物、原文」之意。Occident（= oc + cid = towards + fall = to fall towards）這個字原指太陽落下的方向-西方，因此「西方（國家）」英文稱之為the Occident，而occidental culture／art／music就是「西方文化／藝術／/音樂」。cid（= fall, set, 落下）這個拉丁詞根若與字首ac（= to）結合則形成accident（something that falls down suddenly，意外／偶然／意外事故）；accidental meeting／death是「邂逅／意外死亡（非自殺或他殺）」。cid如與coin連結就形成coincide（=co + in + cid = together + in + fall = fall in together）「同時發生／一致／巧合」。
接著我們來熟悉下列含有ori（升起）與cid（落下）詞根的字彙：
