God-fearing

「fear」 是「畏懼」，但「God-fearing」不表示做了虧心事，怕神懲罰。

神慈祥和藹、樂於助人，所以「God-fearing」絕非懼怕（scared）神，而是「敬畏」（deeply respect）的意思。在《聖經》中，也提到「we are also asked to fear our parents - not to be scared of them.」（我們被要求尊敬父母，而不是懼怕他們）。



We knew better than

「knew better than」 有責怪的意思。

例如：「You should be wise enough, experienced enough, or well trained enough not to have done that wrong！」（你有足夠的智慧與經驗、受過良好的訓練，應該不會做錯！）

文中說：「We knew better than to ask to spend the night with a friend on Saturdays.」 因為周日一定要一大早去教堂，所以不只周六不能到朋友家過夜，恐怕連晚一點睡也不行。



the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the truth

「the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the truth」 最常出現在美國影集的法庭場景，當證人要步入詢問台時，法警會捧著一本《聖經》請證人將手放在上面宣誓：「Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the truth？」（你是否願意發誓說實話、全部都是實話？）

「the truth」、 「the whole truth」、 「 nothing but the truth」重複了三次，是慎重地一再確認的意思。
