crafty

「craft」解釋為「手藝」，也解釋為「手段」（一直想耍手段的），「crafty」就解釋為「狡猾的」了，例如：

He is a crafty old fox.（他是個狡猾的老狐狸。）

We admired the old man for his crafty plan.（我們敬佩那老人的神機妙算。）

The crafty guy fled from honest work in the banana field.（那個愛算計的傢伙，逃避在香蕉園踏實做事。）

Crafty politician will be shown misled by all their elaborate calculations.（奸詐的政客雖然機關算盡，最終害了自己。）

genuine

「genuine」是「真的、名副其實的」，最常用來形容「金子」，例如：

The ring is genuine gold.（這只戒指是真金的。）

It is a genuine Rembrandt.（那是倫布蘭特的畫作真跡。）

Mrs. Ferguson's grief was genuine.（佛格森太太的悲傷毫無虛假。）

有人開玩笑時會說：「You are pretty.....ugly！」因為「pretty」 除了漂亮，也可當作「very」用，所以本來聽起來是：「你很漂亮……」的句子，就成了「你非常醜！」

同樣的，也可以說文中這人是「genuine.....cunning man」（真正的……騙子）。

sound

「sound」是聲音，例如：He did not welcome the sound of practicing piano.（他對傳來的鋼琴練習聲頗不以為然。）

「sound」也形容「完整、健全」，文中「The cunning man got a sound thrashing.....」，意思是說那騙子「結結實實」挨了一頓鞭子。

常見的問候語：「Are you all right？」（你還好嗎？）

通常的回答是：「Safe and Sound！」（安然無恙！）
