提要
幾乎所有的人都非常努力工作，因為可以換取更多的金錢與成就感。所有努力工作的人，心裡都有一句潛台詞「等到……之後，再開始享受生活吧！」
但是，如果設定的目標不斷地調高，一直都在「等到……之後」。 終於到了那一天，不是已經享受不動，就是伴隨了許多的後悔。何不在當下努力之餘，偶爾也享受生活，也許是個好主意。

A woman came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find her 5-year old son waiting for her at the door.
"Mummy, may I ask you a question？"
"Yeah sure, what it is？" replied the woman.
"Mummy, how much do you make an hour？"
"That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing？"the woman said angrily.
"I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour？"
"If you must know, I make 50 dollars an hour."
"Oh,"the little boy replied, with his head down.
"Mummy, may I please borrow 25 dollars？"
The mother was furious, "If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities."
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The woman sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money？
After about an hour or so, the woman had calmed down, and started to think:
Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that 25 dollars and he really didn't ask for money very often.The woman went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
"Are you asleep, son？" She asked.
"No Mummy, I'm awake," replied the boy.
"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier" said the woman. "It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the 25 dollars you asked for."
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. "Oh, thank you Mummy！" he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.
The woman saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his mother.
"Why do you want more money if you already have some？" the mother grumbled.
"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.
"Mummy, I have 50 dollars now. Can I buy an hour of your time？" Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you."
The mother was crushed. She put his arms around her little son, and she begged for his forgiveness.

一名工作到很晚的職業婦女回到家中，疲累並且煩燥，她發現五歲的兒子在門口等著她。
「媽咪，能請問你一個問題嗎？」「當然，有什麼事嗎？」女人回答。
「媽媽，你一個小時賺多少錢？」「這不關你的事，為什麼問這樣的問題？」媽媽氣憤地說。
「我只是想知道，請告訴我」「如果你一定要知道，我一小時賺五十美元（約台幣一千五百元）。」
「哦，」小男孩低著頭回答。「媽媽，我可以跟妳借二十五美元嗎？」
媽媽大怒，「如果你問問題的唯一原因，是你可以借錢買玩具或其他一些無聊的東西，那就趕緊回到你的房間並上床。想想為什麼你會那麼自私。我每天這麼辛苦，可不是為了這幼稚無聊的原因。」
小男孩靜靜地走回自己的房間，關上了門。
媽媽坐了下來，想著兒子的問題，開始變得更生氣：「他怎麼敢提出這樣的問題，只為了要錢嗎？」
大約過了一個小時，媽媽平靜下來，開始想：「也許是他真的需要二十五美元買東西，況且他也沒有常要錢。」於是走到小男孩的房間門，打開門。
「你睡著了嗎，兒子？」她問。
「沒有，媽媽，我還醒著， 」男孩回答。
「我一直在想，也許我對你太嚴厲了，」這位媽媽說：「我經過了漫長的一天，我把我的氣出到你身上了。這裡是你剛提到的二十五美元。」
小男孩坐直了起來，臉上堆滿了笑，「哦，謝謝你媽咪！」他喊道。然後，他伸手到他的枕頭下，拿出一些皺皺的鈔票。
這位媽媽看到兒子已經有錢了，又開始生氣。小男孩慢慢地算著錢，然後抬頭看著他的母親。
「如果你已經有了一些錢為什麼想要更多的錢？」媽媽不悅地說。
小男孩回答： 「因為我原來的錢不夠！媽媽，我現在有五十美元了，可以向你買一個小時的時間嗎？請你明天早點下班回家，我想與你一起吃晚餐。」
媽媽此時彷彿情緒崩潰，緊緊的摟著小兒子，懇求他的原諒。
原來如此
irritate
「irritate」 是「激怒」。例如：His behavior irritated me a little. （他的行為使我有點惱火）。
「irritated」是已經被激怒的狀態，媽媽工作到深夜，身心都非常疲憊，是屬於「一肚子火」的情形。這時候的媽媽，非常「short tempered」（易怒），也情有可原。
frivolity
「frivolity」是輕佻無聊。例如：A serious lecture should not be full of frivolities. （專業學術演講不該通篇都是輕薄無聊的內容）。
媽媽認為兒子要錢是想去買「silly toy or some other nonsense」（無謂的玩具或其他可有可無的東西），使得她辛勤工作都毫無意義了。
crushed
「crushed」是壓壞、碾碎。例如：Don't crush this box; there are pictures inside.（小心別壓壞這個盒子，裡面有照片）。
提到「crush」通常可以想像巨大的力量「粉碎」渺小的物品。
本文中「The mother was『crushed』」因為疲憊的媽媽認定兒子是幼稚又自私的想要更多物質享受，萬沒料到他是為了湊一小時工資，好讓媽媽跟自己共進晚餐。了解真相後，瞬間感動、後悔、心疼同時湧現，當然如同原本的成見被「crushed」一般。
