With her white hairy legs poking out from her frilly pink top and rear end peeking out from a saggy pair of bikini bottoms, Angel looks an unlikely Hollywood starlet. But she is the leading lady of the movie which has stormed the American box office -- Beverly Hills Chihuahua. And the live action Disney dogcom was Number One in the U.S. for two weeks and took US$110 million.

In it, a pampered Paris Hilton-friendly pooch gets lost in the mean streets of Mexico without a day spa or Rodeo Drive boutique anywhere in sight. Angel plays Chloe, the high-society pup with a privileged lifestyle full of fine food, designer trinkets, trips to the spa and afternoons spent lazing by the pool.

But in real life she was a rescue dog who had been cast out by her owners and was about to be put down when a Disney film dog trainer discovered her. However, it didn't take long for Angel to get into the spoilt pet role and soon she insisted on using a doggie double for the running scenes because she refuses to do ruff and tumble.

Angel is one of more than 200 in the film's international cast of dogs -- some seasoned Hollywood stars, others fresh faces found in dog rescue homes in Los Angeles and Mexico. Half of them understand Spanish, half of them English.

It took a team of 60 to train these canine thespians, who can land exactly on their marks, pause for their cues, wait for their lines and stop moving their mouths when the human actors have to speak.

In the film Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore) finds herself alone for the first time in her spoiled life and has to rely on some unexpected new friends, including a street-hardened German Shepherd named Delgado (voiced by Andy Garcia) and an amorous pup named Papi (George Lopez), to lend her a paw to start her journey back home.

Screenwriter Jeff Bushell wrote the part of Chloe with Drew Barrymore in mind because he wanted the dog's character to be part of the Hollywood brat pack, but with an irresistible sweetness -- just like the human actress herself. Drew is so fanatical about dogs that she has even placed her US$4.35 million home in trust with her Labrador-Chow cross, Flossie, after the pet saved her life by barking and thumping wildly on the bedroom door to alert her and her then husband, comedian Tom Green, to a blaze in their house. Just as the couple left the bedroom, the ceiling collapsed.

During their divorce, the actress argued for rights to keep Flossie. 'I adore dogs -- there's nothing I wouldn't do for my dog,' says Drew. 'I rescued Flossie from a Pasadena flea market in 1996 and she means the world to me -- especially after her heroic act of saving my life. Loving dogs as much as I do, I spend a lot of time working for dog shelters. So playing a dog -- panting, growling and barking -- was great fun and easy for me. I even put pictures of Chloe and Flossie in front of me while I was recording the voice-over to get into the dog mindset.’
