lavished

「lavished」是非常慷慨、極其豐富的。例如：「He is lavish in donating money to charity.」（他給慈善事業捐款非常慷慨。）

也可以說是浪費的、無節制的。例如：「lavish entertainment」（鋪張的款待）或「lavish time and money on pets」（花大量時間和金錢在寵物身上。）

文中的「with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him……」

得到（消防隊、親友、群眾）大量的愛與關注的比利，比醫生預估的時間多活了三個月。



heart as big as Phoenix

美國亞利桑那州鳳凰城，是全美第六大城市，人口超過一百四十四萬人。「as big as……」（一樣大），文中形容消防員鮑勃 「heart as big as Phoenix」（心如同鳳凰城一樣大），是比喻他的心胸寬大，雖然並非在火場救災，一樣熱心助人。

「Phoenix」也可譯為「鳳凰」，傳說鳳凰滿五百歲後，集香木自焚，然後從死灰中重生。中國新詩的奠基人之一、第一屆中央研究院院士郭沫若所作的詩歌〈鳳凰涅槃〉中的鳳凰，也是西方傳說中的不死鳥。

比喻消防員如同「Phoenix」浴火重生，也是善禱善頌、祝他好運。



hospice

「hospice」過去是指「旅客住宿處」；現在比較常出現的意思是「安寧病房」。

例如：I met Mary the day she was admitted to the hospice ward where I worked as a volunteer.（我在收容所當義工，瑪麗住進安寧病房的那天，我見到了她。）

「hospice concept」引申的意思，就是護士長認為「任何臨終的人都不該孤獨地走」的觀念。



stare

「stare」是「盯著看」，例如「It's not polite to stare at her in the face. 」（別一直盯著她看，沒禮貌。）

但文中「a mother stared down at her six-year-old son」，母親盯著兒子看，則是自然流露關心之情。
