提要
「Who是一壘手？」是美國著名的諧星Abbott和Costello的喜劇表演節目，兩人生動逗趣的問答（頗似我國的「對口相聲」），在電台、電視播放了無數次，後來灌製了金唱片在國家棒球名人堂不斷重播，儼然是動態裝置藝術。
「Who是一壘手？」敘述Costello（文中簡化為傑克）即將要當棒球員了，Abbott（文中簡化為湯姆）想弄清楚他的隊友有些什麼人，Costello說：他們名叫：Who（誰）、What（什麼）、Why（為什麼）、Because（因為）還有Tomorrow（明天）。 問答之間難免產生誤會，也製造不少笑料。
Jack: Strange as it may seem, they give ball players nowadays very peculiar names.
Tom: Funny names?
Jack: Nicknames, now, on the St. Louis team we have Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third......
Tom: That's what I want to find out. I want you to tell me the names of the fellows on the St. Louis team.
Jack: I'm telling you. Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third......
Tom: You know the fellows' names?
Jack: Yes.
Tom: Well, then who's playing first?
Jack: Yes.
Tom: I mean the fellow's name on first base.
Jack: Who.
Tom: The fellow playin' first base.
Jack: Who.
Tom: The guy on first base.
Jack: Who is on first.
Tom: Well, what are you asking me for?
Jack: I'm not asking you, I'm telling you, Who is on first.
Tom: I'm asking you, who's on first?
Jack: That's the man's name.
Tom: That's who's name?
Jack: Yes.

Tom: Well, all I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name on first base?
Jack: Oh, no, no. What is on second base.

傑克：這聽起來很奇怪，因為現在棒球員的名字都頗詭異！
湯姆：詭異的名字？
傑克：暱稱、綽號啦，例如美國大聯盟聖路易隊，隊上一壘手是Who，二壘手是What，我不知道三壘手的綽號……
湯姆：那就是我想弄清楚的，希望你能告訴我，聖路易隊的有哪幾位仁兄？
傑克：我告訴你，Who是一壘手、What是二壘手、三壘手我不知道……
湯姆：你知道他們的名字嗎？
傑克：是啊。

湯姆以為傑克在問為什麼？ 所以回答：因為（Because）！

傑克：沒有投手哪會是一個好球隊？
湯姆：那告訴我的投手的名字。
傑克：Tomorrow（明天）。

「ask 」是問問題，回答則用「answer」或「tell」，所以傑克說：「 I'm not asking you, I'm telling you.」（我不是問你，我是回答你。）
但是在英文慣用語中，「ask 」表示「請求」（比較客氣）；「tell」則表示「吩咐」（有點盛氣凌人）。 於是同樣的一句：「 I'm not asking you, I'm telling you.」就成了：「我不是在請求 你，我在命令你。）
如果有外國人對你說：「You are not asking me, you’re telling me.」他可不是在跟你練習英文，而是抗議你正在（不客氣地）「命令他」。
entitled
「entitle」是「賦予……頭銜」或「賦予……權利」的意思。
例如：「This ticket doesn't entitle you to travel first class. 」（這張票不能坐頭等艙。）
或是：「His performance entitle him to our respect. 」（他的表現值得我們的尊重。）
本文中湯姆問：「When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?」是問「誰」拿薪水？得到的答案「the man's entitled to it」（意思是「Who」這個一壘手，表現符合他的頭銜、非常稱職，拿薪水理所當然。）
peculiar
「special」 是特別的意思，比「special」 更special，甚至有點古怪的，就是「peculiar」。
例如：The dog's peculiar behavior worried her.（狗狗的怪異行為讓她很擔心。）或：It seems peculiar that he would leave home and not tell anybody.（他不告而別，很奇怪。）
St. Louis team 的球員用：Who、What、Why、Because、Tomorrow 當名字，當然算是「peculiar names」。
猜謎Riddles

充飽氣的輪胎應該是圓鼓鼓的，「flat」翻譯為「平、扁」。「flat tire」表示應該是圓的輪胎變癟了，也就是爆胎。
一輛汽車有五個輪胎，四個在地上跑，另一個「spare tire」（備胎）放在車後。 只有備胎沒氣，駕駛的人才會渾然不知。

（哪裡只有城市，卻沒有房屋、河流，也沒有森林樹木？）
地圖因應不同搜尋需求，會縮放不同精細的比例。在道路地圖上，通常就只有較大目標的城市名稱。

3. When is a gun unemployed?
（槍什麼時候會失業？）
趣味猜謎不必計較「槍」沒有生命，沒有工作也不會「失業」的問題。
「employed」是被雇用；「unemployed」是被解雇。被解雇的通俗說法是：「炒魷魚」（fired）；剛好槍枝擊發也是「fired」。
「The gun is fired.」可以說「那把槍擊發了」，也可以搞笑說成「那把槍失業了！」
