4.Boundless Equanimity{7}
While compassion leads sentient beings to obtaining fortune and happiness, when one practices with a compassionate and joyful mind, they can easily develop clinging and greediness within their minds. Also, when one practices with a mind of kindness, it is also easy for one to develop sorrow and misery within a mind. Consequently, one must apply the mind of impartiality in order to eliminate all thoughts of discrimination and delusions, and at the same time, guide all sentient towards the Buddha Path with a mind of equanimity. Boundless equanimity is the utmost wisdom of the Threefold Wheel of Essential Emptiness. The so-called 珧Let go, only then will you receive.珣 It is like making a big step so you can progress onwards. Therefore, when we propagate Dharma and guide sentient beings, we must be able to let go and eradicate the attachment to loving-kindness, compassion, and joy in order to gain greater achievements.
The Avatamsaka Sutra states 珧frequently practice forbearance and patience; and calmly abide in kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity.珣 Kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the abode in which we abide and rely. Development of the Four Boundless States of Mind can be started within our daily life by establishing the notion of mutual assistance. We should always put ourselves in others’ shoes, and to be considerate. Naturally, the Four Boundless States of Mind can be developed.
