3. Patience (ksanti): Patience is not being passive by not hitting back when being beaten or not responding when being yelled at. Patience is being proactive and responsible, resolving, settling, and having a carefree attitude in dealing with matters.
4. Diligence (virya): So-called right effort is to “prevent negative states of mind豇, overcome negative states of mind豗, cultivate positive states of mind豻, and maintain positive states of mind貤.” Even though one diligently cultivates merit, one also needs wisdom as a guide to prevent from practicing blindly.
5. Meditation (dhyana): A person who practices meditation does not act rashly, speak unmindfully, or think erroneously. Naturally, he will not disturb others, and therefore his wisdom will grow, and he will gain respect and offerings from others.
6. Wisdom (prajna): Guided by wisdom, the continuous cultivation of generosity, upholding precepts, patience, diligence, and meditation, will naturally lead to the attainment of great wisdom.
Thus, “merit” should be guided by “wisdom”,and“wisdom” should be accumulated through “merit”. Merit and wisdom are like two wings of a bird, neither should be ignored. This is called “Dual Cultivation of Merit and Wisdom”.
