Grey cranes fly at sunset over agri-cultural fields at the Agamon Hahula observation park in the Israeli north-ern part of the Jordan Valley, 01 November 2007, looking for a place to sleep during the yearly bird migra-tion from Eastern Europe to Africa. The reddening sky of Upper Galilee appears to darken in the late afternoon as around half a billion birds flee the European winter and flock to north-ern Israel in waves. At this time of year, more than 400 known bird species will cross the fertile region, pausing to rest for several days before heading off to find their winter homes in Africa.

The phenomenon of these majestic flocks of birds appearing out of nowhere in the valley used to be a nightmare for the region's farmers. They chased the cranes off their land to save their crops. After several years of destruction by the birds, the idea emerged to set aside a fixed point to feed them, to reduce the damage to the working farmland. Since then man and bird have lived together in harmony in this corner of paradise.
