Chaquon Whitfield, 17, of Baltimore, spends time with a group of parrots at the Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp in Harrisonburg, Va., Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007.
The special camp helps burn survivors find friendship and acceptance while helping build self-esteem and self-confidence. Some campers have severe burns to their face and over much of their body, while others have burns easily covered by clothing. Either way, they're welcome. Maybe it was a house fire. Or a car accident. Or a gasoline-fueled bonfire. Or a powerful jolt of electricity. Or a lawn mower that caught fire. Young victims at the camp don't worry about stares.
