媒體上常見這個字，像最近紐約時報報導就有兩個例子：State of the art: How to Make Your Cellphone Act Like a BlackBerry（最新發展水平：如何使你的手機運作如黑莓機）；另一例是State of the art: Paying More for a Printer, but Less for Ink （最新發展進度：印表機變貴，碳粉較便宜）。state of the art意指The highest level of development, as of an art, technique, or scientific field, achieved at a particular time（藝術科技等領域在某個時間的最高發展水平）。
