Nigerians voted April 14 in elections for governors and legislators in 36 states, with security forces on high alert and violence reported in the oil-rich south of the country. Major parties see the polls as an indicator of their chances in the April 21 election of a successor to President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is ending his second four-year term. The historic election to choose a successor to ex-general Obsanjo is being billed as the first civilian-to-civilian handover for the first time since the world's sixth biggest oil exporter won independence from Britain in 1960. The April 14 election has been marred by accusations of fraud and vote-rigging. At least 20 people were killed in violence surrounding the regional polls.
