「prince」是「有個有權有勢老爸」的那位幸運兒—「王子」。

除了這個定型的名號，偶爾也可以當「討喜的人」，例如：「He's such a prince, helping me with my homework.」（他幫助我完成作業，真是討喜。）

「國王的兒子」之外，還有一位舉世聞名的音樂奇才「王子」，上月二十一日突然離世，愛爾蘭搖滾樂團U2的主唱波諾，在數小時之內就發表感言。

U2 frontman Bono has marked the untimely death of music superstar Prince by posting the lyrics to one of his most famous – and most Christian – songs on Instagram. The Irish singer took to the social media site late on Thursday, just hours after his contemporary’s death, to post an image of a simple printout of the lyrics to ‘The Cross’, a song from Prince’s hit 1987 album Sign o’ the Times.

Along with the lyrics, Bono simply posted:

“I never met Mozart, I never met Duke Ellington or Charlie Parker, I never met Elvis But I met Prince.”

波諾說：我沒見過莫札特，沒見過艾靈頓公爵或查理帕克，也沒見過艾維斯（貓王），可是我認識王子。」身為搖滾天團的主唱，波諾用古典樂、爵士樂和搖滾樂的代表人物與這位 Prince 相提並論，極度推崇的程度無以復加。

rain poured down

「pour」表示「倒、灌、（大量）傾注」，「rain poured down」 是雨水（像在倒水一樣）傾盆而下；另一個有趣的說法是「raining cats and dogs」。

如果雨滴像貓或狗的體積，想當然爾是非常大的雨啦，據說會用「raining cats and dogs」的說法有許多典故，其中之一是古老的英國，流浪貓狗喜歡躲在教堂的頂樓隔間，當滂沱大雨時，年久失修的建築已千瘡百孔，貓狗無處躲避，被沖刷下來，彷彿就是「下貓下狗」。

另一個可愛的傳說，是天庭從前由「天貓」與「天狗」掌管天氣，天貓管天晴或降雨，天狗負責風的強弱，每當牠們吵架，天氣就會瞬間轉差，天空就會起風，接著轟隆隆地打雷下雨……所以降豪大雨時，就叫「raining cats and dogs」。

scarcely

「scarce」是缺乏的，例如：

Food and water were scarce in this region. （這地區食物和水都相當欠缺。）

「scarcely」則是「幾乎不」，例如：

There is scarcely a man but has his weak side.（幾乎沒有沒缺點的人。）

He could scarcely keep in his fury.（他幾乎不能控制他的暴怒。）
