The Buddha path is a long term commitment, without immeasurable resolutions of mind, it will be like vehicles that have ran out of gasoline, and unable to reach their destination. Therefore, learning Buddhism requires that one generates the Four Boundless States of Mind.
The Four Boundless States of Mind are the four kinds of spiritual minds that must be possessed by bodhisattvas in order to liberate sentient beings.
1.Boundless Kindness{1}
「Loving-kindness brings peace.」 The combination of 「ci」 (loving-kindness) and 「bei」 (compassion) is known as 「cibei」 (compassion). Compassion is the fundamental concept of Buddhism. Any Buddhadharma that deviates from compassion will become evil teachings.
Boundless kindness is a state of mind which wishes for sentient beings to gain joy. However, generally, people usually misunderstand compassion, turning compassion from tolerance and forgiveness into appeasement and indulgence. Thus, compassion must be incorporated with wisdom. True compassion is purified and elevated love. It is selfless and wise services and aid. It is generosity and contributions which do not ask for rewards. In addition, it is resolution which obliges others' wishes. With an integration of love, wisdom, power of vows, and generosity, it is compassion.
