Everywhere in the sutras, it states how practice should be a dual cultivation of merit and wisdom. Even if one wants to be reborn in the Western Pure Land, one should not lack the causes and conditions of wholesome roots, as well as merit and virtue. The second fascicle of the Essays on Five Teachings of Huayan{3} states, “The final teaching{4} discusses that for practice, one who initiates the resolve for enlightenment, must practice merit and wisdom as their dual cultivation. Thus for achieving Buddhahood, there are no other methods than practicing (the dual cultivation of merit and wisdom).” To achieve Buddhahood, there isn’t any special practice, but the dual cultivation of merit and wisdom. In our daily life, how do we accumulate merit and wisdom The Six Paramitas are the best practice.
1.Generosity (dana): Whether donating material goods, giving the Dharma, or giving emotional support, one should rely on the Threefold Emptiness{5} as the highest principle and state.
2. Upholding precepts (sila): It is not only about the appearance of upholding precepts, but paying attention to the true spirit and meaning of upholding precepts that is based on the principle of not offending others, as well as respecting others’ benefits.
