A recent nationwide online poll, conducted by the Government Information Office and responded by more than 780,000 people, cited Taiwanese puppet shows, Mountain Jade, Taipei 101 Building, Taiwanese cuisine, and the Formosan landlocked salmon as the five images that best represent the country.
最近一項由新聞局舉辦的全國線上民調,有七十八萬多人回應,例舉台灣布袋戲、玉山、台北101大樓、台灣美食及櫻花鉤吻鮭為五項最能代表台灣的意象。
Other popular images near the top of the list are Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, Taiwanese opera, temple fairs, wild lilies, the Love River in Kaohsiung, the Grand Hotel in Taipei, and the Lantern Festival.
其他名列前茅受歡迎的意象,還有阿里山、日月潭、歌仔戲、廟會、野百合、高雄的愛河、台北圓山大飯店及元宵節。
Other things that respondents decided were quintessentially Taiwanese were KTV, maps of the island and traffic lights with an animated green man walking at different speeds. The Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, which is dedicated to benevolent activities and relief work all over the world also received some votes.

The poll was the first of a series of activities in search of the images of Taiwan. One of the main purposes was to strengthen local people's feelings for Taiwan, and demonstrate Taiwan's diverse culture, by faithfully presenting various aspects of Taiwan, and provide people around the world with a new window into Taiwan.
