Marie-Laure de Villepin posed only briefly for photographers at the ceremony. But the jacket said it all. She bid adieu in style to the corridors of power, with a custom-made white jacket emblazoned in blue with the words, "Bye-bye," "Adios," "Ciao Ciao" and "Salut."

As prime minister since June 2005, Dominique de Villepin brought down unemployment but ruined his chances of succeeding Jacques Chirac as president by trying to push through labor reforms that provoked massive protests. The silver-haired Villepin, a published author and poet, said May 11 that he has "no idea" what he will do next.
