In Chinese, the words for "hot pot" are "huo guo." "Huo" means "fire", and "guo" simply means "pot." Perhaps this is why hot pot is known as "fire pot" in some parts of the world. One of the most famous kinds of "hou guo" is "ma la hou guo." "ma la hou guo." Yeah! This is a hot and spicy hot pot. "Ma" is the character for "numb". Like when you sleep on your arm and it goes numb, oh! Wow! then you said "Wow! My hand is numbing" . OK, so "ma" is numb, and "la" is spicy. So, this type of hot pot has a numbing, spicy flavor. "Ma la hou guo."
  "Ma la hou guo" is numbing and spicy. Yeah! If you want to say that something is spicy, you usually say that it is "la" ,spicy or "hen la", very spicy or even "tai la", too spicy. If you eat something that is "la" , then you may have to learn another word that uses "la" - the same sound, but the different tone and character-"la du zi" or spicy belly or diarrhea.
