●prick-eared a. 豎起耳朵的
The sniffer dog, who had achieved fabulous feats for the police, was on high alert and remained prick-eared.
那頭曾替警方立下不了汗馬功勞的緝毒犬，一直豎起耳朵，保持高度警覺。
  也可用動詞"perk"（豎起），寫成"The sniffer dog perked its ears."。至於"prick-eared"的相反詞，則是"lop-eared"或"flop-eared"（垂耳的），本欄第十三期已有介紹。"sniffer dog"即"drug-sniffing dog"或"drug dog"，"sniffer" v. 是「聞、嗅」。

●savage a. 凶猛的
This evil-smelling deterrent spray is effective in warding off attacks from savage dogs.
此能發出難聞氣味的防狗劑，對防範惡犬襲擊，十分有效。

●claw v. 撕、刮、搔等
My pet cat clawed the only curtains to shreds at whim, and shed fur all over my house.
我那頭寵物貓突然把全屋唯一的窗簾撕成碎塊，又把貓毛弄得滿屋都是。
  "at whim"是「一時興起、突然想做（某事）」。"shred" n. 是「（布、紙等）碎條」，另一拼寫相似的"shed" v.，則是「脫落」。

●grab v. 攫取、搶奪
The hungry dog grabbed a drumstick from the vendor and ran away.
那隻餓狗從小販搶走雞腿，逃之夭夭。

●loll v. （舌、頭等）垂鬆下來
A dog lolls its tongue out while running.
狗隻奔跑時會將舌頭伸出來。
  提起貓狗，英文有句"rain cats and dogs"，別驚訝，它不是「下著貓狗」，而是「大雨傾盆而下」。
