 「notch up」是「贏取」；「on the wane」是「愈來愈弱小、衰微」。

●make a splash  引起轟動
Intensely avid for quick fame and gain, he tried to make a splash by hook or by crook.

  「avid」是「渴求極殷的」。

●the toast of（某地的）大紅人
The writer of juvenile adventure stories became the toast of the book fair, mobbed by hundreds of her fan readers asking for her autograph.
那青少年冒險小說作家成為書展的大紅人，被數百名書迷團團圍住索取簽名。

  出風頭看似不錯，但「人怕出名豬怕肥」(It's the fattest pig that goes to the butcher.)，如果各位不想成為那頭「goes to the butcher」的豬，還是保持低調（keeps a low profile）的好。
