On 1st January 2024, FGS Auckland Temple successfully concluded its enriching six-day Summer Camp. Under the guidance of the Temple and BLIA YAD Auckland members, 12 participants aged between 9 to12 embarked on a journey of spiritual and personal growth. They engaged deeply with the principles of Three Goodness & Four Givings, embodying these values through a variety of activities including the Chinese New Year lion dance, clearing water tanks, mindfulness meditation and sutra transcription.

Megan Chong and Yunxi Ho both found the experience of cleaning the Temple to be enriching, highlighting the joy found in acts of goodness. Tanush Tailor also made a vow to stay calm, using deep breaths and meditation to control feelings of anger.

Reflecting on the camp, Teacher Thomas emphasised the importance of practice in achieving enlightenment. He shared how the Lion dance practice trains the physique and determination, mastering challenging moves while under the hot and heavy lion head chamber. Teacher Sinjun viewed the camp as an extension and practical application of the teachings from the regular weekly Children’s Dharma Class, enhancing the students’ learning experiences.
As Abbess Manshin explained, enlightenment is akin to a light illuminating a dark room, bringing clarity and understanding. Abbess encouraged participants to keep learning, improving, and gaining wisdom in life. The 2024 summer camp was a fruitful experience and those involved are taking another small step towards enlightenment.
