footstep

「footstep」是腳步；「follow in（one's）footsteps」 是追隨（通常是家人的）腳步：（To pursue something that someone else（often a family member）has already done. ）

例如：

My father was a scientist, and I plan to follow in his footsteps and study science in college.（我的父親是科學家，我打算跟隨他的腳步，在大學主修科學。）

Alice followed in her mother’s footsteps and started her own business.（愛麗絲跟隨母親的腳步，自己開店作生意。）

文中富翁的兒子對父親的奢侈度日不以為然，所以不準備「follow in his footsteps.」

show off

「show」是「顯露」，例如：They showed great courage when facing the danger. （面對危險時，他們顯露極大的勇氣。）

「show off」則是「顯露」得過頭了，變成「賣弄、愛現」，例如：

That politician is in the limelight showing off.（那政客是個前愛出風頭的人。）

The child danced around the classroom , showing off to everybody. （那孩子在教室到處跳舞，在眾人面前成了「人來瘋」。）

Do stop showing off ，it is embarrassing.（快別賣弄了，多難為情啊。）

countless

富人口口聲聲形容為「窮人」的居住環境，在他的兒子眼中，卻是港灣「massive」、田野「abundant」，他更用「countless stars」（數不清的星星）照亮夜空對照富人家中的燈具，寬闊對比封閉，高下立判。

「count」是「數」，「countless」是「數不清」，也就是形容「數量之多，只能靠你自己去想像」，例如：

Only after countless rewrites did Alice consider the report ready.（經過無數次修改後，愛麗絲才認為報告完成了。）

That road serpentined into countless paths.（那條路蜿延曲折，化成無數條小徑。）

The straw roof harbored countless sparrows.（稻草屋頂成為無數麻雀的庇蔭。）
