This is a file photo of a corner restaurant on Penny Lane in Liverpool, England. In 2006, Liverpool council member Barbara Mace proposed renaming streets associated with slavery, and was surprised to learn that Penny Lane was among them. After a lively controversy the proposal was withdrawn. The street was named in honor of 18th Century slave ship owner James Penny, and in the 1960's became famous following The Beatles song describing life along the street.

Penny Lane is a song written by Paul McCartney. McCartney and John Lennon grew up in the area and they would meet at Penny Lane junction to catch a bus into the centre of the city. The street is an important landmark, sought out by most Beatles fans touring Liverpool.
