2.A friend who is like a scale : This means a friend who weighs you like a scale. When you are more superior, he will bow to you; however, if you are inferior, he will step over you. In other words, when you are capable, have status and power, he will bow and scrape; but once you lose status and power, he will become arrogant and look down on you. It is just like a scale, if what is placed on it has enough weight, the scale will lift; but if the weight is light, it will drop.



2.有友如秤︰如秤的朋友就是，如果你比他重，他就低頭；如果你比他輕，他就高起來；也就是說，當你有辦法、有名位、有權勢的時候，他就卑躬屈膝，阿諛諂媚的向你低頭；等你功名權力沒有了，他就昂起頭來，看不起你了。就像天秤一樣，物重頭低，物輕則仰；有與則敬，無與則慢。



3.A friend who is like a mountain : This means a friend who has a heart big enough to accept many friends, just like how a mountain allows different trees, animals and birds to grow, and live freely. Therefore, having a friend who is like a mountain is like having a gold mine which all birds and animals are attracted to it and are proud to be with it. This means that this type of friend can share the wealth, glories and joys with others.



3.有友如山︰如山的朋友就是，心胸廣闊，能夠容納很多朋友，就如高山一樣。山能廣植森林，豢養一切飛禽走獸，任憑動物聚集在裡面，自由自在的生活。所以，如山的朋友，譬如金山，鳥獸集之，毛羽蒙光，貴能榮人，富樂同歡。
