2. Vinaya-pitaka 律藏
Vinaya is a Sanskrit term that means “to subdue.” It is a set of disciplines or rules estab-lished by the Buddha to help members of the sangha community to subdue the passions and bad habits confronted in their everyday life. Its basic meaning is also “to eradicate.” Thus, Buddhists are able to eradicate the transgressions committed by their body, mind and speech from the past by observing the vinaya or precepts.
The vinaya-pitaka can be furthered catego-rized into the following: 1) Complete Vinaya, 2) Sutras of precepts, and 3) Commentaries on the Vinayas. For example, The Sarvastivadiri-vinaya (Shih-Sung-Lin), the Vinayas in Four Divisions (Si-fen-lu), the Mahasamghika-vinaya (Mo-ho-seng-chih-lu), the Vinayas in Five Divisions (Wu-fen-lu), the Bhiksu Percepts, the Bhiksuni Precepts, and Sadaprarudita (Sa-po-do-lun) are all part of the Vinaya-pita-ka.
