A VegRun with the theme “Run for good health and love for our earth” was conducted on July 10, 2023 from Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Mabuhay Temple to Rizal Park and back to the temple. It started at 5:30 AM and ended around 8:30 AM. The

VegRun was organized by the temple and co-organized by the temple Project Management Program with the guidance and leadership of Abbess, Venerable (Ven.) Miao Jing; Social Education Unit Ven. Zhi Pu and Dharma Service Unit Ven. Chueh Tzu. The students currently attending the 4-month Project Management with Humanistic Buddhism Approach Training.

The VegRun included a walk and stop-over to Malate Parish Church and the Manila Bay Walk Dolomite Beach. The distance of this route is about 10km. Aside from the Venerables, Guang Ming College (GMC) students and temple staffs, our inter-faith brothers and sisters from the Focolare Movement Pasay Community, joined us in the VegRun.

A total of 34 participants registered and accumulated 340 km in the said run. Since 1 kg of rice will be donated by Buddha Light International Association (BLIA) Philippines for every 10 km that the participants ran, we were able to raise 34kg of rice for donation to the less fortunate citizens.

After the run, we headed back to the temple Main Shrine to say a Prayer for Natural Environment by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, presided by Ven. Miao Jing. She remarked that this morning VegRun signified our commitment as neighbors and friends in protecting the environment through spirituality and sustainable living.

The VegRun included historical, spiritual, and cultural aspects. As the saying of historical because it included the historical Rizal Park where the statue of Jose P. Rizal, a Filipino national hero was executed; Spiritual, because we visited the Malate Parish Church which is an old Catholic Church in Manila; Cultural, because we visited the Manila Bay Walk Dolomite Beach. This beach front was renovated and preserved to became a part of the citizens’ culture walk for sunrise and sunset viewing.
