This combo shows reproduction from clockwise: "Blossoming Chestnut Branches" by Vincent van Gogh (1890), "Count Lepic and his Daughters" by Edgar Degas (1871), "Poppies near Vetheuil" by Claude Monet (1879) and "Boy in a Red Waistcoat" by Paul Cezanne (1888), reproductions made avalaible on February 11, 2008 of paintings stolen from the Buehrle Foundation museum last Sunday in Zurich. The paintings stolen by three armed men are valued at more than 180 million Swiss francs (NT$5.2billion), police said.
Musem director Lukas Gloor said the stolen works are "the four finest in the museum's collection".
Three masked men entered the museum on Sunday around 4:30 pm and threatened staff with a pistol. The robbers loaded the paintings into a white car and drove off towards the suburb of Zollikon, southeast of Zurich. "We're talking about the biggest ever robbery carried out in Switzerland, even Europe," Zurich police spokesman Mario Cortesi said.
Gloor said the paintings are so well known that it would be impossible to try and sell them on the open market. He did not exclude the possibility of a ransom demand but said none has yet been received. The museum is offering a reward of 100,000 Swiss francs (NT$2.8million) for information leading to the return of the paintings.
The Buehrle museum was founded by German-born arms magnate Emil Buehrle. Buehrle made his fortune with the Oerlikon-Buehrle munitions factory in Zurich, which sold arms to both sides in World War II. He began collecting art in the 1930s but made most of his purchases of key Impressionist works in the post-war period. The museum opened in 1960, and holds more than 200 paintings including seven each by Van Gogh and Cezanne, six by Degas and five by Monet, according to its website.
The most iconic art theft of all time is probably still that of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, taken from the Louvre in Paris on August 21, 1911. It was recovered in December 1913.
