全球大部分人口都生活在貧窮線（poverty line）下，生活無憂的我們，不能無視他們的苦況：

●dingy a. 暗黑而骯髒的
The dingy and insanitary environment in the shantytown is a breeding ground for crime.
  貧民窟的環境既髒暗又不衛生，是罪惡孳生的溫床。
  「insanitary」的美語拼寫法是「unsanitary」。

●indigent a. 赤貧如洗
The living conditions of that indigent family can be best described as "filthy"- a stuffy squalid house and dilapidated-looking furniture.
那貧賤家庭的生活環境以「髒亂」來形容也不為過─房子通風不良又污穢、傢俱外表殘破。
  「filthy」大體用來形容事物、東西，指它們極髒；「squalid」專用來形容地方，指其環境、衛生等極髒，惡劣不已；「dilapidated」形容建築、傢俱，指它們破舊、失修。

●seedy a.（指人）衣衫襤褸的、邋遢的
He was told point-blank that he looked rather seedy in those torn clothes.
有人不客氣地說他一身破衣褲，太不修邊幅了。
  「point-blank」是「（語調不客氣）直接了當地」的意思。

●shabby a.（指人）衣衫襤褸的、外表寒酸的
My sister, in a staring red dress, was accosted by a swarm of shabby panhandlers.
身穿惹眼紅裙的姊姊，被一群襤褸的乞丐兜搭討錢。
  兩例句中的「seedy」及「shabby」也可用來形容衣服（或物品、地方等也可），前者意為「髒亂、殘舊破爛的」，後者意為「（因長期使用、失修等）而殘舊破爛的」。

●propensity n. 習性
The propensity for spitting on the streets is common in some less civilized countries.
在部分文明不大發達的國家，人民頗有在街上吐痰的習慣。
