Aseries of watercolours by Adolf Hitler were sold at a British auction house Mullock's recently for over 100,000 euros. The 13 paintings, most of them landscapes and found in a garage earlier this year by the seller, went for 95,589 pounds (about 107,000 euros or 140,000 dollars).

Among the paintings is a portrait of solitary figure dressed in brown peering into wine-colored waters. The date is 1910, the signature reads “A. Hitler” and scribbled just over the mysterious figure are the letters: “A.H.”

So is this a portrait of the Fuehrer as a young man

“I don't think they're fakes,” said Richard Westwood-Brookes, historical documents expert at auction house Mullocks that carried out the sale. He said he did not believe anyone would have the nerve to fake the pictures, given the global publicity they have received.

The authenticity of items associated with Hitler has long been a bone of contention. In 1983, German magazine Stern published what it said were extracts from Hitler's diaries. They were later exposed as forgeries.

Westwood-Brookes reiterated that he believed the works, all signed "A. Hitler", were genuine. An Austrian expert issued certificates of authenticity for the pictures, which once belonged to a British soldier who was stationed in Essen, Germany, in 1945. But Westwood-Brookes conceded that no one could be sure.

The portrait itself sold for about 10,000 pounds ($14,600). The buyer John Ratledge, 46, said he planned to hang it at home or in his office. “I am very pleased. I thought they would go for between five and six thousand,” Westwood-Brookes said.

The sale also included a collection of official Nazi magazines for schoolboys and women, featuring knitting patterns and recipes. Westwood-Brookes had expected the 12 watercolours, oil painting and two other works on offer to fetch between 400 and 1,000 pounds each.

“I put their artistic merit as on a par with a good, competent amateur,” he said. “But people do not want to acquire these for their artistic merit. They just want to have something that belonged to someone famous from history.”

Two years ago, 21 paintings attributed to Hitler were sold for 118,000 pounds or more than twice the pre-sale estimate, by an auction house in England.

The paintings date back to between 1908 and about 1914, when the formerGerman leader was a young man trying to earn a living as an artist in Vienna.

“Unfortunately for the world, he was not accepted into the Vienna Academy, which was where he wanted to be,” Westwood-Brookes said. “Of course, if he had been accepted, then we would have known him today asan artist and not as an evil tyrant.”

Westwood-Brookes acknowledged that the pieces were “hardly Picasso,” but-- concerns over authenticity aside--Hitler's works had a track record of attracting high bids.

Even if it were proven genuine beyond a doubt, the Hitler watercolor would not be the first self-portrait of the Nazi dictator discovered. In 1987 the late historian Werner Maser said he had unearthed an oil portrait of Hitler executed in 1925. Maser, who wrote several Hitler biographies, told the AP at the time that the painting showed Hitler in traditional Bavarian dress with short trousers and long white socks.
