During the time of Sakyamuni Buddha, many disciples took refuge in Buddha. Among these disciples, the most famous disciples were the “Ten Principal Disciples.” The so-called “Ten Principal Disciples” each had their individual foremost ability. First, let’s list their names below:

Sariputra－Foremost in wisdom

Maudgalyayana－Foremost in supernatural

power

Purna－Foremost in explaining Dharma

Subhuti－Foremost in expressing

emptiness

Katyayana－Foremost in debating treatises

Mahakasyapa－Foremost in the practice of

asceticism

Aniruddha－Foremost in the sharpness of

his divine eyes

Upali－Foremost in observing precepts

Ananda－Foremost in having heard the

words of Buddha

Rahula－Foremost in esoteric practices



本師釋迦牟尼佛住世度眾的時候，皈依的弟子很多，但最有名的是「十大弟子」。所謂十大弟子，各有第一，列表如下︰

舍利弗──智慧第一

目連──神通第一

富樓那──說法第一

須菩提──解空第一

迦旃延──論議第一

大迦葉──頭陀第一

阿那律──天眼第一

優婆離──持戒第一

阿難陀──多聞第一

羅羅──密行第一

1.Sariputra: Born in Kalapinaka, a town of Magadha, his father was a well-known Brahmin treatise master and his uncle was Kotthika. When Sariputra was eight, he was already a famous treatise master. After encountering Bhiksu Assaji , he took refuge in the Buddha. At almost 80 years old, he passed away just three months before Buddha’s parinirvana.



1.舍利弗︰出生在摩揭陀國的迦羅臂挐迦村，父親是有名的婆羅門論師，舅父是拘稀羅。舍利弗八歲時，就成為有名的論師，由於阿說示比丘的因緣，而皈依了佛陀，快八十歲時，先佛陀三個月入涅槃。
