A Brazilian federal police vehicle leads a convoy of trucks loaded with logs that were illegally cut from the Amazon rainforest and confiscated during an operation by the state government for transport them to the state capital, near Tailandia, 180 km south of Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon River, February 25, 2008. The state police is in the middle of one of the biggest opera-tions ever carried out in the Amazon against illegal log-gers.

About 200 heavily armed elite National Security Force troops arrived in this remote Amazon town to boost a crackdown on illegal logging. Thousands of enraged res-idents burned tires and blocked roads in the town of Tailandia last week to protest the logging crackdown they claim will cost them their livelihoods. Some 450 police officers swarmed the town over the weekend to restore order. More than 1,000 elite troops will help po-lice in anti-logging operations in the area for an unde-termined period of time.

The campaign is part of a larger government push to prevent an apparent increase in illegal logging and jungle burning that threatens to reverse three straight years of declines in Amazon deforestation. A January government report detailed an apparent rise in lost rainforest, prompting President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to send federal police and environmental agents to Tailandia and 35 other areas where deforestation appeared to have jumped.

Police earlier this month seized 10,000 cubic meters of illegally logged lumber. The wood will be auctioned off by the government, which plans to spend the proceeds on rainforest protection.
